(Partial) Answer: Screen tearing is caused by the fact that the processor is not fast enough to support the refresh rate. Reducing the refresh rate to 40 Hz solves the problem -- at the cost of some flicker. 50 Hz did NOT solve the problem. I'll try 45 Hz when I get a chance.

I'm copying a largish (3.5meg) file from an NFS mounted file system to root.

(1) It is taking forever (or maybe it has hung) -- BAD
(2) My other shells seem hung -- WORSE
(3) The screen (which is displaying a qpe in calibrate mode) is "tearing" -- WORST.

Is the driver for the ethernet chip doing something nasty? After all, the processor is supposed to guarantee cycles to the display first.

It can be tough to develop when the only way to get files onto the system is by moving CF cards.
