Sure it's possible. You have to follow the installation map in the corner of page 11 of the module's schematic. I prefer the dual path charging method because it allows you to run with or without a battery and it also provides some input voltage regulation if you need to use power supplies that go above the 4.65V limit.
The main problem here is that you cannot use the baseboard as is, and in my case, is not a problem since mine is custom. The reason being is that you don't need the baseboard's 3.3V supply for the main input (but still need it for the "legacy" parts). You do need to put the main power input to the pads called 5V which may or may not be routed on the baseboard.
Having to use the "legacy" 3.3V is akward when you want to control sleep modes but is disabled over SPI to the MC13783 (see GPIO4). If this is a portable application, you may want to wait until your are done evaluating the kit and ready to design your own board before worrying about charging batteries as it might be more of a headache than you need right now!
